Ground Ferns

We specialise in the cultivation of both native and exotic ground ferns, offering you an expansive range of varieties and leaf types. Depending on your needs, you can select native ferns that tend to produce fronds throughout most of the year, or exotic varieties that display an attractive flush of new growth in spring.

Our growing methods result in ferns of superior quality. Most of our ground ferns are carefully grown from spores – a process that can take up to two years to reach our 1.5L grade.

Ground ferns suit a variety of applications across larger landscaping projects or the small home garden. Ground ferns can assist in the preparation of land for regeneration projects or compliment existing planting.

Most ferns prefer a shady situation but the requirements for damp or dry soil can vary. If you have an area that requires ground cover, or an attractive border, think about planting ferns.

Dicksonia squarrosa

Tree ferns abound in our shade houses. They’re a must for every garden or landscaping project – our range of native varieties suit a wide range of situations and the fronds look attractive year-round.

We are often asked for ‘pungas’ and many people are surprised when we ask which one they mean. We supply your favourite native tree ferns including the ponga (the iconic Silver fern Cyathea dealbata syn. Alsophila dealbata), mamaku (Cyathea medullaris), kātote (Cyathea smithii), whekī (Dicksonia squarrosa), and whekī ponga (Dicksonia fibrosa).

Individual tree ferns can grow into impressive statement specimens or you can grow your own patch of New Zealand native bush. Our tree ferns are well established in their containers, ready for planting in cooler weather. With the right care during the first year after planting, your efforts will be rewarded with a truly majestic display of New Zealand’s natural beauty.

We provide:

  • Punga logs (in 2 metre lengths) for landscaping projects
  • Fern spores nationwide and worldwide
  • Help with problems relating to the growing of ferns
  • Help in selecting varieties of ferns to use in specific locations
  • Hire of outdoor ground and tree ferns for weddings, corporate events and other functions
